Codetta™

Semantic Technology for Enterprise Search of Business Information with Secure and Contextual Delivery of Search Results to Authorized Viewers
July 9, 2007

Codetta™ is a semantic technology for enterprise search that works with PointCross’ Orchestra™ SOA environment.  It reduces interaction time and accelerates decisions for innovation dependent, knowledge intensive activities and processes.  Codetta combines in one offering the four key prerequisites of semantic enterprise search: business ontologies, authorization models, industry taxonomies, and contextualized content.

Codetta

Codetta is for knowledge workers who need contextually relevant information quickly to make decisions.  Example industries include Exploration and Production (E&P), Pharmaceuticals R&D, and Financial Ventures.  People in these industries are constrained by their authorization levels; by their role and responsibilities; and by anti-trust laws, governance regulations or policies.

Codetta services can be configured for Microsoft Office SharePoint Services, and other enterprise applications.  Codetta includes out-of-the-box adapters for common search engines.

The conventional application oriented view of information couples data to their applications, rather than to their business context.  People manage data using applications; consequently, IT organizations manage user access levels to these applications.  Commercial search engines in turn use these centrally controlled access level controls (ACLs) to exclude results that users are not authorized to see.  Correlating information stores, ACLs, and applications is very cumbersome and time-consuming for a global enterprise that is constantly generating content.  Similarly, transferring content to controlled repositories is impractical and expensive.  Furthermore, ACLs require huge overhead to manage rapidly changing roles that are more granular and dynamic than those listed in the corporate organizational chart.  Finally, traditional enterprise search does not span related content like emails, workflow instructions, and deliberations from disparate applications.

Today, the state of enterprise search is that people have far better search facilities for the entire web, than they have as a business user to activities in the next cubicle.

Codetta solves this problem elegantly.   With Codetta, federated roles and responsibilities are created and mapped to contextualized business ontologies.  This role layer filters out content that a user is not authorized to see.  Users are therefore presented only with authorized search results spanning all the live data and information in a global enterprise.  Codetta ensures that data, qmails™, documents, business deliberations, and workflow instructions are tied to their source contexts managed by Orchestra.  Users can delve into a context to access other related disparate data and information.

Besides business ontologies, Codetta uses semantic descriptions (folksonomies) that evolve in businesses, and their linkages to industry standard taxonomies.  These are used to obtain a set of equivalent terms and lingo that relate to the expression being searched.  Codetta synthesizes a surrogate search string using semantic logic for raw results from its rapid character search and third party search engines.  These results are funneled through the authorization filter to display authorized information.

Codetta delivers rich, scalable search facilities to the enterprise in one offering.   It brings to users the simplicity and power of search engines running on the web, without compromising corporate need-to-know and information security tenets.
